Being driven is often used in a positive connotation. We like to work with people that are driven. As I sometimes like to be driven.
But has this being driven also negative sides? I think so.
Being driven means I’m never in the here and now. I’m either running away from something frightening or painful, or I’m running towards something that I think will be worth it. Can I be driven and at the same time enjoy the moment? Seems hardly.
Here our use of the term may help. “Being driven” has no active form. So we’re only re-acting to this thing that drives us instead of act in our own interests and minds.
I often find myself in a state of being driven. Typically, when there’s a clear task to do. It sometimes even feels like flow, but with the difference that I’m more exhausted and annoyed.
Why am I so much against being driven? Partly because I value curiosity and exploration. And being driven is toxic for both of them.
